Hello World
Or rather, Hello new blog…I’m hoping to include a few choice words and pictures in these blogs.  The blog is only slightly related to Glyn Smith Photography and Hydrophilous Limited in that they are my webpages. The rantings and ramblings in these blogs are more of a personal view of the world…
Anyway, about me (as that’s the title of this page…)
By day I work in IT. Until recently, I was an ICT contractor, but I have now re-entered polite society as a permanent employee…
I spend my work days dealing with everything from desktop PCs to Virtulised servers and SANs from OS Migrations & software deployment to structured cabling and patching. It can make for a varied day job!

My escape from workday, cubicle based life is the outdoors and other forms of technology.  I’m passionate about water (I tweet as Hydrophilous – waterloving – as well as GlynSmithP), and love being around or on water, either canoeing or windsurfing, or with a camera.  Being outdoors is a fantastic escape from the day to day grind, and I enjoy Bushcraft to a not very competent standard, although it is a good excuse to buy shiny tools!

The technology I enjoy is mostly centered around cameras. I love my Nikon gear. It’s too easy to get caught up in the ‘which camera is the best’ game, but I strongly believe that the photo is 95% made by the person who is taking it, with a small fraction dependant upon the actual camera. Having said that, a top quality camera is a joy to use and can make a massive difference to the quality of the final photo. Although I shoot mainly digital,I have recently gone back to film in the shape of an old Bronica medium format camera to concentrate on the image taking process and to slow things down.

As with lots of things, there is a restricting (or possibly a balancing) factor, which in my case is Sami, my son and Coral, my long suffering wife.  We’re hoping Sami takes an interest in the Great Outdoors – he’s been camping since he was three weeks old and he had his first canoe trip aged 11 months!
